Hearst Tower

The building to the left is the Hearst Tower. There is a picture of it earlier in my rainy walk/ipod post. When I emailed the pics from my phone to myself I also sent them to my friend Travis in Boston.

I have never been able to figure out why the base of the building was in such contrast to the tower. Travis informed me that the base was built in the 20's and was to include an art deco tower. Due to the depression the tower was never built. When the new tower was designed (by Norman Foster) the base could not be touched as it is on the national historic register. The design called for the base to be gutted and the modern tower now rises from within it. I am told there is a waterfall inside which regulates the building's humidity.
