Driving accross country in a Volvo wagon

While riding the train home from work yesterday I was listening to NPR's Talk of the Nation Podcast. Part of the Podcast was an interview of Matt Gross, "The Frugal Traveler." He is writing a series of articles (which come out every Wednesday at nytimes.com/frugaltraveler) about his experiences driving across country for 12 weeks in a Volvo station wagon on the cheap. He is relying heavily on suggestions of what to see, where to go, where to eat and stay from readers suggestions.

Aside from the fact that the NYTimes is actually paying someone to do this, what I found really interesting is that he is using something called The Couch Surfing Project (couchsurfing.com). This service, like the name implies, puts travelers and people in the places/communities they visit in contact for the sole purpose of free accommodations (sleeping on a stranger's couch).

He described the people he has met and his experiences sleeping on stranger's couches as something that has completely enriched and made his trip so far more unique then staying at Super 8s or Eccono lodges across the country.

If you are interested in reading about the rest of this guy's journey check out the link above every wednesday for his newest article.
